Are You A) Funky B) De-funked or C) Smooth Light? (please mark your answers with a #2 pencil …)
“There are two types of people,” my then boyfriend said on our way to his firm’s Christmas Dinner, “you’re either a Sweet Caroline person or you’re a Forever in Blue Jeans person.” He turned to a co-worker and friend in the backseat of the car. “Which one are you?” he asked, pointing his finger in her face.
‘Oh,” she rolled her eyes and beamed, “I’m definitely a Sweet Caroline person.” She added, “Love it.”
“Me, too.”
I agreed with them. “Sweet Caroline wins out.”
The co-worker turned to him. “And then there’s definitely a difference between dog and cat people.”
“Dog,” he said, pointing to himself.
“I can’t even be around a cat,” she told him.
He turned to her and then to me and made an observation – “See there’s a reason why we’re all together here today.”
I raised my eyebrows. “So what you’re saying is that life is boiled down to household pets and Neil Diamond.”
“Exactly.”
I laughed and said, “I’ll throw something even better into the pot.” They looked on at me with intense interest, and then I let them have it: “You’re either Funky, De-funked or Smooth Light.”
Their faces screwed-up, and they rocked back and away from me for a moment as if I had some strange, contagious disease.
“What are you talking about?” my boyfriend asked; he appeared confounded, which is a sizeable achievement for a writer talking to a trial attorney.
