Top Five Pittsburgh Pirates Pitching Win Leaders
Wilbur Cooper: 202 wins
Southpaw Wilbur Cooper is the Pittsburgh Pirates’ all-time wins leader. Cooper won 17-plus games in each of his final eight seasons in Pittsburgh from 1917 to 1924. He had his winningest year in 1920 when he tallied 24 wins to start a streak of three straight 20-win seasons. In 3,199 innings with Pittsburgh, he posted a 2.74 ERA to become the first and only 200-game winner in a Pirates’ uniform.
Sam Leever: 194 wins
A member of the team for his entire 13-year career, Sam Leever is the second winningest pitcher in Pittsburgh Pirates’ history. Leever debuted in 1898 and became a full-time starter in the following year. He put together four 20-win seasons with a career-high of 25 wins in 1903 when he led the National League with a 2.06 ERA. He led the NL in winning percentage three times as he posted a .660 career winning percentage on a 2.47 ERA.
Babe Adams: 194 wins
A leader on Pittsburgh’s first World Series winner, righty Babe Adams ranks third among the Pirates’ all-time wins leaders. Pitching all but the first game of his career in a Pirates’ uniform, Adams put together a 2.76 ERA in 2,995.1 career innings from 1906 to 1926. In 1909, Adams became a Major League regular and posted the lowest single-season ERA in Pirates’ history with a 1.11 mark; he followed the regular season with three complete game wins in the 1909 World Series to lead the Pirates to their first championship. Adams won double-digit games 11 times including two 20-win seasons in 1911 and 1913.
Bob Friend: 191 wins
Three-time All-Star Bob Friend ranks fourth on the Pittsburgh Pirates’ all-time wins leaders list. Friend pitched for the Pirates from 1951 to 1965, earning all but six of his career wins with the team. His breakout season came in 1955 when he improved his ERA from 5.07 to 2.83 to lead the National League in the category while earning 14 wins. He became a first-time All-Star in the following season as he led the NL in innings with 314.1 to increase his win total to 17. Friend had a career-high 22 wins in 1958 and he earned 13-plus wins nine times with the Pirates.
Deacon Phillippe: 168 wins
Ranking fifth among the Pittsburgh Pirates’ all-time wins leaders is old time righty Deacon Phillippe. Phillippe began his career with the Louisville Colonels who folded after the 1899 season. Joining the Pirates in 1900, he started his stint with four straight seasons of 20-plus wins and a sub-3.00 ERA. In 12 years in Pittsburgh, he had a .634 winning percentage on a 2.50 ERA, walking only 299 batters in 2,286 innings.
