The Intel Corporation is the largest manufacturer of semiconductor chips based on income.The company is the creator of the x86 series of processors commonly found in most personal computers. Intel was founded on July 18, 1968 as Integrated Electronics Corporation by semiconductor pioneers Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore.

The Intel headquarters is located in Santa Clara, California. The company also has facilities in Argentina, China, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Mexico, Israel, Ireland, India, Philippines, and Russia. In the U.S. Intel employs more than 45,000 people in Colorado, Massachusetts, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Washington and Utah.

Open Source Support

Intel has a significant stake in open source communities. For example in 2006 it released under the MIT license X.org drivers for their graphics cards. On other occasions, Intel released FreeBSD drivers for network available under BSD license, also ported to OpenBSD. And went on to release the EFI core licensed under a BSD-compatible. The firm participated in the Moblin project and the campaign LessWatts.org.

But Intel has also been criticized because the drivers for the wireless cards are distributed under a proprietary license. Other companies and communities also have criticized Intel and Linspire.

McAfee acquisition

On August 19, 2010 Intel, the world’s largest maker of microchips, announced the purchase of McAfee, a computer security and software company whose most famous product is McAfee antivirus. At the same time, McAfee had previously announced investments in companies specializing in security. The acquisition announced by Intel recorded a transaction of $ 7,680 million.

Atom launch

In 2008, Intel launched a new range of Intel processors called Atom. These new processors are very small and are designed for mobile internet devices and netbooks.
