First, you need to actually know the skill before you get the job. The times are different from the late 90′s when companies were hiring anyone and some companies may be reluctant to hire you due to your lack of programming experience.
Since you have no programming experience in a “real” job, create a portfolio of programs of the things you can do with your mad programming skills and show the portfolio to perspective employers. You could also try a community college and see if they offer classes on whatever technology you wish to learn.
Some thing most computer programmers overlook is knowledge of the industry their program is to be used in. For example, if you’re making a program to be used at a financial firm, experience in the finance industry is a huge plus. Same goes for defense, health care, etc. Since you probably have 20+ years of experience in some industry that could be a huge plus for you, especially if you find a programming job in the industry which you have lots of experience.
The Ruby language and the Rails framework are fairly new. In my browsing of job ads, employers looking for Ruby programmers is rare, but maybe I’m just out of the loop. Is learning Ruby on Rails easy? That’s relative. The speed at which you learn is dependent on how much effort you put into learning it and may take longer since you have no prior programming experience. But once you get one down, a lot of the languages are similar.
Best of luck on the career change!
