How To Be In The Moment And Reduce Stress
Step One: Learn the following simple breathing technique and practice it whenever you feel the need to slow down and find a sense of inner balance and calm.
Curl the tip of your tongue and connect it to the roof of your mouth, keeping it there throughout the breathing exercise. Inhale through your nose filling your belly area with air. To ensure you are inhaling correctly, place your hand on your stomach while inhaling, feeling your abdomen and low back expand with air).
Inhale for a count of four, then hold your breath for a count of seven, then completely exhale the air out your mouth through pursed lips, in a steady manner for a count of eight (don’t blow it out all at once).
Repeat the above sequence three more times for a total of four sequences.
Breathing techniques are a wonderful way to dramatically change your respiration, heart rate and blood pressure. According to http://www.WebMd.com, “Deep breathing is one of the best ways to lower stress in the body.”
Step Two: Spend several moments gazing on something beautiful near you, whether it is a meaningful photograph on your desk, a painting on the wall, a flowering plant, a scene through the window or a piece of art. If your desk, walls, windows, cubicle, patio, living room, garage, etc. is barren of beauty, do something today that will bring beauty into the area(s) where you spend most of your time.
Step Three: Think of three things you are grateful for right this very moment. It could be as simple as the ability to breathe freely.
Step Four: Spend some money on flowers for your home and/or office, making a regular habit of having flowers around you. Enjoy them during your moments of respite. Their scent, texture and color will provide ideal moments for simple pleasure, gratitude and endorphin release as often as you indulge in these gifts of nature.
Step Five: Invest in an aquarium of colorful fish for your prime time area. Let the rhythmic movement, beautiful colors and varieties of fish bring tranquility into your every day. Small, acrylic aquariums fit easily on the average office desk and provide instant transport into the present moment and little retreats from the busy work.
Step Six: Start your day with one of the exercise modalities that are focused on slow, rhythmic movements and inner awareness, such as yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi or low impact aerobics. Controlled movements require focus and develop awareness of your body, among many other well known benefits. Focus and awareness happen in the moment. It’s tough if not impossible to balance on one foot with your eyes closed when your mind is focused on the Dow Jones Industrial report.
Step Seven: Purchase a Zen Garden or a Sand Labrynth for your desk. Described as tools of meditation, these simple kits provide an opportunity to engage in a tranquil activity which can lead indirectly to problem solving, enhanced creativity and other positive results in a relaxing way.
