Replace Windows Vista With Windows XP on Dell Inspiron 1420

1) First you will need to make sure that you have .NET Framework 2.0 installed. (nLite needs .NET Framework 2.0 to work).

2) Install nLite. Follow the install wizard prompts like language, location, etc.

3) Copy contents of your Windows XP installation CD to some folder on your hard drive. For simplicity’s sake I am going to use this location: “C:WinXP”.

4) Download Dell Inspiron Drivers and execute each file so that contents of files are extracted to the specified directory (I will use default, which is “C:DELLdrivers)”. All drivers that you will need are in the “Resources” section.

5) Launch nLite. First screen: press “Next”.

6) “Locating the Windows Installation” screen: Press “Browse” and navigate to or type in “C:WinXP”, and press “Open”.

7) “Presets” screen: press “Next” (you will not have any presets the first time you run nLite).

8) “Task selection” screen: press “Drivers” and “Bootable ISO” and then press “Next”.

9) “Drivers” screen: press on “Insert”=>”Multiple driver folder”.

10) “Browse for folder” screen: Navigate to the “C:DELLdrivers” and click “OK”.

11) “Select multiple drivers to integrate” screen: click “All” and then “OK”.

12) “Driver Integration Options” screen: press and hold “Ctrl” and use mouse cursor to select options on line 3, 6, and 11 (counting from the top).

13) Back at “Drivers” screen: press “Next”.

14) “Processing…” screen: press “Yes” on the dialog titled “Apply Changes?” and then press “Next” button when it becomes clickable.

15) “Bootable ISO” screen: press “Make ISO” and in “select where to save the ISO” choose a folder and press “Save” (You might want to change the default text in the “Label” text box to something that you would remember [I named mine WinXP_1420]).

16) After you create your bootable image you might want to burn the image from nLite to a CD or DVD. DVD is generally a better option; because the performance speed is noticeable when you’re installing Windows from a DVD as compared to a CD (DVD is read faster than a CD).

17) There are plenty of image burning programs that you could use after you are done with nLite. How to burn an image is outside of the scope of this How to.

18) After you’ve burned your new image file to a CD/DVD install Windows XP on your new DELL Inspiron 1420 without the dreadful blue screen of death!
