Question by Jason: Does one need to get regular ccna before going for ccna security?
I desire to get into networking security and have decided to pursue cisco certifications. I have no previous certs or experience, short of setting up a home network. Since I know I want to follow the security path, can I just go directly for the ccna security (640-553) test or is there a prerequisite?

You need a CCNA as a prerequisite.

Even if it wasn’t a prerequisite (it is) you’d be thoroughly lost without the basics of routing and switching under your belt.

Just as an example, when the instructor starts talking about using ACLs to control the traffic through a tunnel or to define interesting traffic he does not have time to back up and explain the basics of ACLs.

The short answer is “yes”, but if the new CCNA Service Provider Operations certification is any indication, I don’t think it’ll be required when Cisco revises the Voice/Security tracks. The new trend seems to be making the CCENT the prerequisite for associate-level certifications, and making the original CCNA a separate track from the other concentrations.
