Question by Cowgirl_1: If you obtain a new product key from Microsoft for Windows XP, what happens to your old product key?
I have a custom computer with multiple hard drives that I can boot from depending on my mood. Each hard drive is running XP. I completely erased one of the drives and reinstalled my copy of Windows XP on it. Now I cannot activate because I receive an error that says I have exceeded the number of activations allowed. If I go through the process of obtaining a new product key so I can activate Windows on this drive, what will happen to my drives that are doing just fine with the old product key? What is the least expensive solution that will get me back up and flying with XP on all my drives….and how much do you think that would run? BTW, I’ve seen the regedit trick so you don’t have to write it all out for me. I just want to know if I’m going to blow all my working drives by fixing the one that’s down and how not to do that.

I’ve had issues with WinXP activation before. If you call the phone number for it (the number shows up on the activation screen as a means of getting the key instead of going online), they’re usually pretty good about it.
An alternative solution which may or may not work is to ghost an activated hard drive onto your other hard drvies, then change the setup as needed. Since the hard drives are in the same computer, I think the activation key should still work on the different hard drives.
