Question by Limewood74: How to download Compiz effects and apple them?
I use Ubuntu Linux occasionaly, I have been looking at youtube and I have seen some demonstrations of Beryl and Compiz, but I can not seem to apply the Compiz effects for one main reason, I can not seem to access the page on compiz-fusion.org to download Compiz for Ubuntu. First of all can someone tell me where I can download Compiz from someplace besides compiz-fusion.org , and how to apply Compiz effects.

Compiz is a standard addon to Ubuntu Gnome. I have tried it, didn’t need anything except enable the high effects in some wizard GUI. Compiz fusion can be download via Ubuntu add software (apt-get) packaging thing icon smile How to download Compiz effects and apple them? I don;t remember exactly but that’s how I did it.

    open terminal and type:

    sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

This will install the compiz manager and place it (assuming you are using Gnome) under System>Preferences

Alternatively you can use the Synaptic Package manager to install it under System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager

  • † Oh yeah

Ubuntu already has Compiz by default; the only thing missing is the advance desktop effect settings to modify the effects.

Go to Add/Remove, in Applications, and search for CCSM. Once that is downloaded you will find Advance Desktop Effect Settings in:
    System > Preferences

To apply the settings go to:
System > Preferences > Appearance, under the tab Visual Effects.

Now since you are trying to get the Apple theme as well, you will need Emerald. In the Terminal type in:

    sudo apt-get install emerald

Setting up Emerald as your theme manager is a little tricky. It has to be setup in both advance desktop effects settings and the terminal. Open up the terminal and type in: emerald –replace
Do Not Close The Terminal Yet, next open up Advance Desktop Effects Settings and click on Window Decoration; replace what is currently in the command with: emerald –replace

You can download the themes for Emerald here:
    http://www.gnome-look.org

    Emerald uses Compiz themes.

To setup the Mac-like dock you will need to install and setup something called Cairo-dock. I have no experience setting this one up, so you are on your own in this matter.
