    Good book, March 7, 2011

I do not agree with most of the negative reviews below. This book is great for real professional developers who already have a strong knowledge in web development. The term “Beginning” here doesn’t mean it is for complete beginners but for people who wants to get start with “Web App” on “iOS”. The first part takes a quick look at the tools required to follow the examples in the books (which can be all downloaded from the publisher website!), validation tools and the debugging tools. The next part leads you to the design part, starting from a web application anatomy (building a web app HTML/CSS/JS template) to HTML5 features and extensions available with iOS, like a detailed overview of the video and audio capabilities. Finally, the last part give you an overview of some JavaScript APIs like the Multi-Touch API (gestures recognition) or the location API (here, you’ll build a compass web application) and a good point on OOP with JavaScript. Definitely an interesting book.

I found this to be a great book for anyone with some experienced in web development that wants to create web apps for the iPhone/iPad. I have several years experienced in conventional HTML, CSS and JavaScript for PC based browsers. This book does not cover the basics of these subjects. It does cover HTML5, CSS3 and Object-Oriented JavaScript as they apply to iOS development for mobile Safari. I found these chapters to be just what I needed to move into mobile development. The coding examples in the book were sometimes a little incomplete, but when I looked at the example web pages for the chapters, everything fit together great. The book also covers functions specific to iOS on the iPhone/iPad, such as using touch gestures and events, location aware apps, and data storage on the devices. These were all new subjects to me. Overall, a great book for a somewhat experienced web developer wishing to develop iOS web apps.

I think it’s a good read, definitely to be recommanded. It’s a great guide to writing *decent* web apps. While it may mention a few things that you may be already aware of, it’s still always good to point them out in writing again.

I’ve already created web apps before reading this book, but it meant in cases spending hours of trial and error. Many of my problems encountered were answered directly in this book, so it could have saved me a lot of time had I read it earlier.

Lastly, I think it’s a great way of saying thank you to the author for his efforts in creating the webapp.net framework.
