How do I reset the password on my Cisco router?

Posted on

I bought a Cisco 1700 router from an auction, but there is a password.

How can I reset the router to original factory specifications?

There should be an indentation on the back or the underside of the router. It looks a bit like a hole for a scew, but it’s actually a button that you can push with a paperclip or maybe a pencil tip. Hold it down for 5-10 seconds to restore the router to factory settings. Then you can log in the adminstrative interface to your router firmware by typing the IP address of the router into a web browser (while connecting via Ethernet). You can then log in using the default username and password, which you can then proceed to change immediately.

I’ve never dealt with the 1700, but I know from dealing with other Cisco routers, there’s always a way to reset the password. I found this document online: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps221/products_password_recovery09186a0080094773.shtml

    Good luck!

any router’s password is normally set to “admin” and wouldn’t be changed if it was home used.
