How do i install Ubuntu to just a disk and not my computer i am downloading from?

I have currently recieved the dreadful Disk Boot Failure, instert system disk and press enter message and do not yet want to pruchase a new harddriver. Is there any way to download ubuntu as an operating system but yet not have it installed on the computer i downloaded it from.

    first download the ubuntu ISO file. Then burn it to a cd using an iso burner.
    After that you just need to restart the computer and then a menu will show up saying if you want to install ubuntu or just boot into ubuntu without any changes in the cd. However anything you change or download will be lost. In some cases you may need to set the bios to look in the cd or dvd drive before looking in the hard drive for an operating system.

    If you got a flash drive with 2 gb or more, you can make a usb startup that can save any changes you have done, but you must be in ubuntu OS to do this. Instructions here: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ubuntu-810-persistent-flash-drive-install-from-live-cd/

    also the cd must be 700 mbs or more to hold ubuntu in it.

    It’s a live CD by default (it doesn’t affect your hard drive until you click the “Install” button).
