How big should my hard drive be for Ubuntu to run fast and smoothly?

Posted on

I plan to have both Windows Xp SP3 and Ubuntu on my hard drive. I plan to put them on different partitions, but I do not know how bug to make the Partitions. I have a 180GB hard drive. I was thinking 100GB for windows, and 80Gb for Ubuntu. Is this to small or big to run Ubuntu smoothly.

HD size has nothing to do with how well the OS runs.

Thats plenty! I think most Linux distros suggest at least 20 or 30 gigs, while I personally suggest 60+ gigs for any operating system.

I’d say it might be too big; it really depends on how much you’re storing on the Ubuntu partition though. Personally, I get by fine with 20 GB on my Ubuntu partition.
When I say too big, I mean that you may simply be wasting storage that you may find you want on your windows partition.

Ubuntu will live comfortably on 10 GB…….of course, the more the merrier.

Run the liveCD….once the User Interface is up, you should see an install icon….

CAREFULLY run through your installer and you will find you will have the opportunity to resize your current partition. Then select the newly unused space for Ubuntu…..DO NOT CHOOSE USE ENTIRE DISK….that is the default

I can not stress enough, CAREFULLY READ YOUR DIALOGS. Failure to do so will wipe your current installed OS…

once you are done with the install, you will see a boot menu.. There is a way of selecting the default OS by default…you can find this and other information in the Ubuntu forums
