If you went to high in the 80′s, or at all for that matter, this book resonates. It can’t be easy to share one’s most confusing and vulnerable days with others. Jennifer Niven does just that, with grace and wit. A must read.

This is a memoir about going to high school in Richmond, Indiana, where people are happy in a wholesome Midwestern way and nothing much happens. I got a little tired of reading about immature pranks involving trashing people’s cars and passing notes about so-and-so’s outfit, but every time I considered putting the book down, there would be a genuinely funny anecdote. So I found the book patchy and uneven but sometimes enjoyable. A one-time boyfriend of the author told her that she was so complicated, it was as if there were all these boxes and she wasn’t letting anyone in, and this was a problem with the narrative too. I don’t think there was enough introspection or depth.

No matter what year or where you went to high school this will be a trip down memory lane. What Jennifer Neven says, “high school is (almost) the same anywhere” is true and you will be able to relive your high school memories by reading this memoir. If you are older all you have to do is substitute duck tails for mullets, and it seems girls had big hair in almost any year.

There are short little chapters that tell of student life and the cult of cheerleaders and driver’s ed classes, academics and teachers resigned to their fate and snow days, school activities, commencement and parties. There is a section that returns to many of her friends today.

The life of a high schooler is so well captured…’we prayed to be noticed but not to stand out’ and ah… the first heartbreak and of course the prom. It’s a nice read for any ex-high schooler and come to think of it I think I’m going to give my copy to my friends from England, because it explains so much better than I have, what an American high school life is like.

I was initally interested in this book because it was about my neighboring high school. What I got was an excellent read. I recommemd this book to everyone, especially those who went to high school in the 1980′s. Jennifer captured the essence of the 80′s all over. Anyone can picture their own Joey, Rip, Tommy and Ned while reading this book. It makes you think about those years once again and know that maybe it wasn’t so bad after all.

Having gone to Richmond High School during the same time period, it was not a difficult choice for me to purchase this book to read. What I did not realize, was that I was going to have a difficult time putting the book down. Jennifer did an amazing job of depicting life as a student at RHS and living in Richmond in the 1980′s. The book truly kept me interested from cover to cover. This book is light-hearted and entertaining.

Jennifer, thank you for bringing back memories that I now appreciate more than I did when I was living them!
