How to tell I’ve logged on to a Redhat or Debian machine? ?

Posted on

Here’s the scenario: I login or run a script on a Linux machine.
How do I/my script tell that I am on a Debian or Redhat machine? No, I don’t mean checking the existence of some programs specific to either distribution .. what I want is something along the lines of “cat”ting a file under /proc or /etc, or .. running a command such as “uname”.

That’s as easy as, “What version of Redhat am I running”?

Anyway, I don’t know about Debian but for Redhat, you can say, cat /etc/*-release

I say *-release because I forgot the exact name but try it. It will display the Redhat version.
