How do I install Ubuntu without losing data?

I’m a little bit confused about how to install Ubuntu without losing anything on my computer. I want to be able to run Windows as well as Ubuntu, so I have to create a new partition, right? If so can I create a new partition without erasing my harddrive?

How much disk space is recommended for Ubuntu?

I want to know how much disk space does Ubuntu 9.10 x64 need to run fastly and smoothly, putting into account that I may need to download packages and install software afterwards.. They say that the minimum is 4 GB, but I know that this wont stand too long after installing software and downloads.
