Have you tried Wubi? You can install Ubuntu 8.04 just by downloading Wubi. There is no need to burn a CD, just download Wubi and click the Wubi installer icon on your computer and follow the instructions to install Ubuntu. Wubi will do everything for you, so no need to worry about partitions. Wubi installs Ubuntu just like any other windows application. When you first start up your computer you will see a black boot screen where you can use the arrow keys to choose to boot Windows or Ubuntu. By default your computer will boot into Windows after a set amount of seconds if you don’t do anything. This can be changed if you want. Go to http://wubi-installer.org/

You can have both Ubuntu and Windows together. This can be achieved by installing Ubuntu using Wubi http://wubi-installer.org/
You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.
Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

You’ll need SOME boot loader if you want to do it on a separate partition.
